What’s cooking in cpg1.5

The next major release of coppermine i.e. cpg1.5 will have number of new features which all of you will most definitely adore however In this post I have highlighted only a few of them.

1. User album in admin allowed categories

This was one long standing feature awaiting to get its way into coppermine. From 15x onwards registered users will be able to create albums in the public categories. From the category manager page admin will be able to specify which group of users can create albums in that category.

The best thing about this feature is that coppermine will now be more social networking friendly. Previously users were only allowed to create albums in their personal gallery and those albums were not visible on home page and this made the user confined to his/her personal gallery only. Now any category can be public which means the albums in those categories will come from different users.

2. Permanent URLs for search engine friendliness

When coppermine first started SEO term was not even coined. In today’s world a site cannot survive without SEO friendly URLs. Till now the URLs in coppermine were based on position of the pic in an album. The biggest drawback of this approach was that a position of pic keeps changing in an album as new pics are added to that album. This used to hamper the search engine indexing and also a lot of times people coming from the search engines used to land on a different pic than they anticipated.

This issue was solved by replacing pos with pid (permanent id of pic) in the URLs. Since the pid will never change for a given pic - the URLs remain absolute.

3. Comments approval and captcha

Well, comment spam needs no introduction. The captcha plugin and mod were one of the most used plugins/mods in our forums. Looking at this we decided to put captcha in the core code. The only gotcha in captcha is that it will work only on those servers which have GD 2.x with freetype support. We are working hard to find alternative but for now this is the only option.

A second layer of security will be comments approval. If turned on - each comment will require admin approval before they start appearing to the world.

This was only the tip of iceburg. Stay tuned for more cool features.

    Salam Abbas,

It’s nice to read this and what’s cooking in next cmp, I’m sure that the next version will be amazing specially when the SEO will be on one of the main features and the captcha thing as in the core code as well.

Good luck guys and thanks again Abbas for sharing this info ;)

Nice to hear, that CPG is not dead. It leaks of many modern features, but still looking pretty nice. I hope you’ll be able to revive this project with new releases.

    Cheers.

What about submiting one picture to multiple albums?

I’ve hacked cpg14 to do this, but I’d like to see this as a feature :)

  9. 9 Abbas Ali

@Daniellek: There was no need to hack cpg14 as the feature already exists in that version.

Great to hear about the progress on CPG.
Will integration with Wordpress be a part of the next release?
I currently use Cutline 3-Column Split 1.1 by Chris Pearson as my theme in order to merge the two. I also use Coppermine Badge Widget for WP by Herself’s Webtools (http://herselfswebtools.com).

    ~Andrew~

  12. 12 Abbas Ali

@Vinyols: No launch date has been fixed for 1.5. Though a feature freeze stage is imminent.

@AndrewRH: Unfortunately no wordpress integration will be there :(.

  13. 13 Seppo

I really look forward to see 1.5 update! Many thanks to developer team for your great contribution (gives a low bow).

@AndrewRH: mathse has kept on developing good old Coppermine integration plugin for Wordpress. It can be found from: https://blog.artworkz.net/?p=283

    Hi,

It seems it’s late to ask for (the possibility to include) a couple of features I’ve been missing:
    - use a photo site as repository for the files, and link them from coppermine database. So it’s not necessary to import the photo into the website.
    - some kind of user-defined photo order. Right now I must update the database when batch-importing photos in some cases.

    Anyway, thank you for CPG.
    Jose Luis.

  17. 17 Abbas Ali

@Jose: cpg15x is now in a feature freeze stage and no new features can get in. Sorry.

    Sounds really great!

By the way: This Blog is a nice way - apart from the forum - to let people know what’s happening and it really gives the whole project more transparency. I know, if you are willing to find stuff in the forum, you can search for it … so on and so forth.
I just hope the more “official” announcements will be in this blog instead of/additionally to the forum, and please try to post here as frequently as possible! Since the entries only come from you, there is a different attitude towards the contents and I really enjoy that.

Thanks for the hard work on the new version! Especially #2 and #3 are really useful features.

One more thing: Will there be RSS or Atom support in cpg15? :-)

  20. 20 Ted

I have a question: in CPG 1.5, will access to the gallery be configurable for different user groups? Like if I want a certain group to be able to view the gallery, while other groups can’t.

In my 1.4 gallery members in my bridged forum’s banned user group can still access the gallery, because in 1.4 there isn’t a way to restrict access to the gallery per user group (only for guests). Unless there’s something I’ve missed…

    Thanks

  21. 21 Abbas Ali

@Ted: Something on that lines will be there in cpg15x.
